Cha Cha Turns 38 (Part 1)

Tonight is my birthday party! —Not for another three hours. So I have time to write here.

Justin is watching the Chargers game. I hear him cheering unabashedly from the other room. He’s got reason to be excited: five minutes into the game, the Chargers are up by 10 with two interceptions.

I just heard him open his second beer.

“Don’t be all drunk at my birthday party,” I say as I walk over to my Chargers fan and sit on his lap. I feel the electricity, a current running through his hands, as he strokes my legs and back, constantly moving, releasing waves of energy onto me.

“This game is a really big deal. It’s the playoffs,” he says. There is a tremble in his voice. Anticipation.

“Whoa,” I say. And sit for a minute more.

Fuck, I hope they win. My birthday party needs a win.

It’s pouring outside.

To tell you the truth, if tonight weren’t my birthday party, I’d probably join Justin in front of the big screen. We’d get dinner delivered in time for the fourth quarter. By 8:30, the whole thing would be over. And it would be rainy and dark outside. We’d probably turn on twenty minutes of Netflix before Justin started to fall asleep on the couch.

That’s a typical night around here.

But that’s not how tonight is going to go.

Tonight, I’m going to put on a very sexy dress that I bought at the thrift store two weeks ago. (I look extremely good in this dress. Perhaps this birthday party is nothing more than an impatient excuse to wear it?) With my glitter boots. (I think they were $25 dollars at Buffalo Exchange in San Francisco. On Height street. Such a trip that I lived there. For 3.5 years!)

Tonight, I’m getting all dressed up. I ordered new moisturizers two weeks ago. They arrived relatively quickly so I’ve had a week to try some of the products. My flaky skin looks better. (My skin is a sensitive subject. But that’s another story.)

Tonight, I am going to put on makeup.

Tonight is my night. Because why the fuck not. Other people have birthday parties all the time! So why not me?

Most people couldn’t make it. The last two friends canceled this evening, blaming it on the rain. So it’s just me and Justin now.

But I just can’t let it go. Tonight is my birthday party.

I’m going to look good. I’m excited about that.

It sounds like the Chargers are winning! I’m excited about that too.

Originally from the east coast, Cha Cha lives in southern California with her fiance (he’s a plumber) and their bob-tailed cat, Copper Soup.

As a woman, Cha Cha spends her time writing, reading (though not as much as she wishes she did), watching Project Runway (way more than she wished she did—especially since the show ended in 2019), trying to exercise for at least 20 minutes a day (otherwise, she won’t leave the house because she works from home), learning how to manage her money, and talking to herself out loud.
