3:47 p.m.
Simon & Schuster Publishing; Midtown Manhattan
Today I realized that I haven’t written in a while, so I figured now’s a good time to catch up since I am bored at my desk and can’t leave for another hour. Plus, I have news…
Ok, so remember when I was so excited because I got a job? Well, that party was a bit premature.—Turns out, a temp job can only get you so far. And in my case, it wasn’t far enough.
Sure, scoring this job was impressive. I mean, Hello! Simon & Schuster is one of the most prestigious publishing houses in New York! And if I want to be in publishing (I want to be in publishing?), this was like hitting a home run in the first inning. But now the ump is calling a foul and threatening to take me out of the game.—I should have known it was too good to be true. No one hits a home run their first time at bat.
Two weeks ago, Jordan and I thought it would be a good idea to bring our guarantors (a.k.a. our parents) into the city on the same Sunday so we could look at potential apartments. It was a good idea…for Jordan. She starts her full-time job next week. I, on the other hand, ended the day deflated. The I-got-a-job-at-Simon-&-Schuster party was officially over.
Because a temp job is just that, temporary. I am not part of the team, just a replacement part, while Pam, the rightful holder of my title, recuperates on maternity leave. Sure, I was through the doors, but for only four months and for only $16 an hour. Even if it were possible to live in New York earning those kinds of peanuts, without a full-time position, no landlord in their right mind would let me sign a lease.
Admitting the truth to myself was the hard part. Telling Jordan was easy. She understood completely and insisted that there was no rush.—Easy for her to say. She also has a place to live that isn’t with her parents. (Although I bet she wouldn’t mind that either. Her parents are sweet and supportive. Not like mine, Doctor and Mrs. Judgmentalstein.) Also starting next week, she’ll be crashing with a friend from high school out in Bay Ridge. That’s about as far out in Brooklyn as you can get, but still, the City is right there, easily accessible by Subway. Meanwhile I’m staring down the barrel of the Jersey Turnpike.
Anyway, since that day, I have been OBSESSED with finding a REAL job. No joke, I have sent out more resumes in the past two weeks than I have in the last six months.
I had two interviews last week and another one today. I also have one scheduled for next Tuesday too.
But…It looks like I don’t have to worry about that!
Because…today’s interview was actually here at S&S. It was only two floors down, so it was easy to sneak away in the middle of the day. Especially because I was only gone for fifteen minutes!
I wouldn’t believe how fast everything changed if I didn’t write it here:
2:30 p.m. – Interview starts
2:45 p.m. – Back at my desk
2:48 p.m. – A call from HR offering me the job!
And so, as of today, I officially have a REAL job. That’s right! You’re talking to the next National Accounts Sales Coordinator at Simon & Schuster Publishing.
Watch out, World! Here I come.
