It’s February, and love is in the air.

However, this year, we’re not craving something sweet, like Crumb’s Ooo La La cupcake—a combo of chocolate cake and pink-hued vanilla frosting—or anything seductive, like Savoy’s pairing of Nantucket bay scallops and black trumpet mushrooms. No, in 2011, our hearts desire something a little spicy.

The Pickle Back, a surprisingly mouthwatering match of Jameson Irish Whiskey and pickle juice, is the libation sensation of the season.

Tempted to taste this new cocktail craze for myself, I headed to Wilfie and Nell, the West Village sister bar to Bua on St. Mark’s Place. The Jameson* was smooth, and the pickle juice was spicy. One shot down, I felt like I had been struck by Cupid’s arrow. Warm and euphoric.

This V-day season, surprise your Valentine (and your taste buds) with something simple, brilliant, and a little spicy. Order a couple of Pickle Backs, and take a shot for love.

*Not a fan of whiskey? Bua’s got your (pickle) back. Impress the bartender with your order of a pickle martini–a spicy twist on the dirty classic.
