4:25 p.m.
Bryant Park at 42nd Street, New York City
I just got a promotion!!! That’s right! You’re talkin’ to the newest Assistant Marketing Manager for Body+Soul Magazine and Martha Stewart Weddings Magazine!
Here’s basically what happened: Around 3:30, I was bored, “watching” Friends at my desk, when Rich appeared and asked me to follow him into his office.
At this point, I was freaking out. Did he see me watching TV? Everyone knows I’m not very busy. Am I getting fired?! —You know, just a casual thirty-second tailspin between my desk and his.
Anyway, next thing I know, Rich says, “How would you like to not answer my phone anymore?” I’m not sure I understood the question, so just kinda looked at him. Luckily, he kept talking, “Because we would like to promote you!”
That I understood.
For the next fifteen minutes, Rich went on about my new role and responsibilities. Eventually, he told me what I really wanted to hear, “Why don’t you head out early today.”
I left the office and crossed the street to find a table in Bryant Park.
That’s where I am now. At one of those round, collapsible metal tables. Sitting in a round, collapsible metal chair. Facing uptown, with a clear view of 11 W. 42nd Street.
If I squint, I can see it clearly, my foot now firmly inside the Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia door.
Today, it’s Consumer Marketing, but I haven’t lost site of the creative, the editorial dream. Eventually, there will be an opportunity to switch departments. And besides, look at me now. Getting promoted! Getting noticed. Martha loves me!
Ok, that’s enough for today. (It’s getting a little too chilly out to keep writing anyway.)
Time to walk home! Oh, and I have to call my parents to tell them the news—Check me out with my Real-job promotion.
